The English Department of Translation and Interpretation offers English-Chinese/Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation, Major in Arts and Sciences.
Educational Goal： The goal of the Department of Translation and Interpretation is to enable students to meet the requirements for social, economic, scientific, and technological developments. Specifically, they haveto achievethe following:
- To have a balanced development in the acquisition of knowledge, abilities
- To build a solid foundation of knowledge and theories of Translation, its
culture, and how to effectively develop the skills of translating;and
- To become interdisciplinary and application-oriented talents of Translation
who are capable of conducting translation, management, marketing, language
services and research in the fields of foreign affairs, trade, tourism, education,
culture, and the fields involving science and technology.
Students majoring in Translation are required to learn the basics of Translation theory and practice, English Language, Literature, Social Culture and the five English language skills required of a translation and interpretation course: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating and to master the methodology of conducting research. Besides, we also aim to cultivate students’ ability in dealing with information, communication and team work.
Graduates are required to have the following knowledge, ability and quality:
First, they are required to lay a solid foundation of English and Chinese languages, to have a profound understanding of translation basics, to master the skills of English listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating.
Second, they are required to master the skills in translation (English-Chinese or Chinese-English) and acquire knowledge of British and American societies and cultures.
Third, they need to know how to use computer soft wares and online resources in translation, do translating or interpreting independently, and apply their professional knowledge and skills into translation practice.
Fourth, they should have broad knowledge of British and American literatures, linguistics, translations and international trades and to know how to use them into practice.
Fifth, they can use various methods to search literature and data and use modern information technology to have access to the information needed, and they are capable of conducting research.
Sixth, they need to follow the motto of the university and build the personality of“sincerity and perseverance”, and to keep a right attitude towards life and the world. Equally important is they need to have a healthy body and a sound psychological quality.

Courses for Practice: Practice (including Translation Practice, Acquaintance Practice and Graduation Internship), Social Practice (including Social Investigation and Career Practice Training), and Research and Thesis Writing (including graduation thesis and term paper).
