集美大学外语教育史最早可追溯至陈嘉庚先生1918年创办的集美师范学校英文和日文课程。历经百年发展，2004年4月，原集美大学师范学院外语系和集美大学公共外语教学部合并，组建集美大学外国语学院。目前，学院下设英语系、日语系、翻译系、大学英语教学部、术科英语教学部和航海公共英语教学部6个系部。学院现有1个省级平台——福建国际传播中心省级基地；3个校级平台——集美大学海丝沿线国家国别研究院、外语教师教育与发展研究所和中外文化比较研究所；5个院级中心——课程思政教学研究中心、外国文学研究中心、学科竞赛指导中心、语言服务中心和语言实验中心。
学院现有英语（师范英语方向和商务英语方向）、日语和翻译三个本科专业，其中，英语专业于2022年获批国家一流本科专业建设点。研究生教育有区域国别学一级学科硕士点、学科教学（英语）专业硕士点和翻译专业硕士点。截至2026年4月，学院全日制本科生969人，硕士研究生115人。教职工130人，其中专任教师111人，实验技术人员4人，专职党政管理人员14人。专任教师中福建省高层次人才2人，厦门市高层次人才4人；高级职称42人，中级职称81人；具有博士学位或在读博士教师32人，硕士学位教师89人。此外，学院聘请讲座教授4人、客座教授2人，每年还聘请外籍专任教师近20人。
学院以学科建设为龙头，加强师资队伍建设，提升教师专业化水平，不断提高教育教学质量。以本科教育为基础，积极发展研究生教育，重视提高学生学术能力和创新实践能力。经过多年建设，学院已经形成了外语教育学、区域国别学、海上丝绸之路研究、海丝翻译与文明交流互鉴研究和海洋文学文化研究等多个特色鲜明的学科团队。近年来，学院教师高层次教学科研成果不断涌现，承担国家社科基金重点项目1项、一般项目5项，教育部项目7项，省社科基金项目17项；发表SSCI、CSSCI、A&HCI等国内外核心期刊论文75篇；出版专著、译著、教材等近30部；获福建省优秀教学成果奖3项，国家级一流本科课程3门，省级一流本科课程14门，省级本科教学团队1个，省级教改项目4项、教育部产学研项目10项，入选全国“慕课十年典型案例”1项。多名教育硕士生毕业论文分别获得全国优秀教育硕士专业学位论文和福建省研究生优秀学位论文。
学院与国内外著名高校、科研院所建立了广泛联系，承办多场高级别国际、国内学术会议；海丝沿线区域国别研究院入选“高盟”（高校区域国别学人才培养与学科建设联盟）理事单位，成为中阿（拉伯）高校合作“10+10”成员单位；与中国驻外使领馆、国际组织在国际传播和人才培养领域开展密切合作；与美国、英国、澳大利亚、新西兰、日本、伊拉克等国高校签署共建协议，加强师生国际交流，拓展国际视野。
学院重视学生实践能力培养，现有同声传译、计算机辅助翻译和多模态语言实验室等语言教学研究实验室，以及8间教师教育微格实训室。先后购置了Trados计算机辅助翻译系统、Unipus外语教学在线平台、句酷智能英语作文训练系统、讯飞智能口语训练系统、亿学商务英语实训平台、智能化航海语言数据处理与分析平台以及iTEST外语在线考试平台。现代教学设备和信息化教学平台建设有力促进了外语教学改革步伐，提高了学生培养质量。

The history of foreign language education at Jimei University can be traced back to the English and Japanese courses offered at Jimei Normal School, founded by Mr. Tan Kah Kee in 1918. After a century of development, the School of Foreign Languages was established in April 2004 through the merger of the Foreign Language Department of Teachers College of Jimei University and the Public Foreign Language Teaching Department of Jimei University. Currently, the school comprises six departments: English Department, Japanese Department, Department of Translation and Interpretation, College English Teaching Department, English Teaching Department for Music, Sports and Arts Majors, and English Teaching Department for Marine Majors. The school also hosts one provincial-level platform—the Fujian International Communication Center Provincial Base—as well as three university-level platforms: the Institute for Countries Along the Maritime Silk Road of Jimei University, the Institute of Foreign Language Teacher Education and Development, and the Institute of Comparative Studies on Chinese and Foreign Cultures. Additionally, there are five school-level centers: the Research Center of Ideological and Political Education, the Foreign Literature Research Center, the Academic Competition Guidance Center, the Language Service Center, and the Language Lab Center.
The School of Foreign Languages (SFL) offers three undergraduate programs: English, Japanese, and Translation & Interpretation. The English major, which includes two concentrations—English Education and Business English—was designated a National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Site in 2022. Postgraduate programs include a Master Program in Area Studies, a Master of Education in Subject Teaching (English), and a Master of Translation and Interpreting. As of July 2025, the SFL has 969 full-time undergraduate students and 115 postgraduate students. The SFL employs 130 faculty and staff members. This includes 112 full-time teachers, 4 lab technicians, and 12 full-time administrative and CCP staff members. Among the full-time faculty members, one is recognized as a Fujian Provincial High-level Talent and 4 as Xiamen Municipal High-level Talents. 34 faculty members hold senior professional titles, while 81 hold intermediate titles. 32 teachers hold or are pursuing doctoral degrees, and 89 have master's degrees. Additionally, the SFL has appointed 4 lecture professors and 2 visiting professors, and employs approximately 20 full-time foreign teachers annually.
We have established disciplinary development as our guiding principle, strengthening faculty development to enhance professional competencies and educational quality. Building on our strong undergraduate foundation, we actively expand graduate programs while cultivating students’ academic excellence and innovative practical skills. Through years of strategic development, we have formed distinctive research teams specializing in foreign language pedagogy, area studies, Maritime Silk Road studies, translation studies and cross-civilization dialogue along the Silk Road, and maritime cultural research. In recent years, our faculty has demonstrated exceptional achievements across teaching and research domains. We have secured competitive research funding including 1 major and 5 general projects from the National Social Science Fund, 7 Ministry of Education grants, and 17 provincial-level social science research projects. The faculty's scholarly output comprises 75 publications in internationally indexed journals (SSCI/CSSCI/A&HCI) and approximately 30 academic monographs, translated works, and textbooks. In pedagogical innovation, we have earned 3 Provincial Outstanding Teaching Achievement Awards and developed 16 quality courses (2 national-level and 14 provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses). Our educational leadership is further evidenced by the recognition of 1 provincial-level teaching team, 4 teaching reform initiatives, and 10 industry-academia-research collaborative projects endorsed by the Ministry of Education. Notably, one of our MOOCs was selected as an exemplary case in the national "Decade of MOOCs" initiative. Multiple Master of Education (M.Ed.) theses from our program have been honored with both the National Excellent Master of Education Thesis Award and the Fujian Provincial Outstanding Graduate Thesis Award.
SFL has forged extensive partnerships with leading universities and research institutes at home and abroad, hosting numerous high-level international and domestic academic conferences. Based on its Institute for Area and Country Studies along the Maritime Silk Road, Jimei University has been elected to the executive council of the University Alliance of Area and Country Studies (UARC), and has become a member of the China-Arab States “10+10” Higher Education Cooperation Initiative. Working closely with Chinese embassies, consulates and international organizations, SFL is active in international communication and talent-development projects. Collaborative agreements have been signed with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Iraq and other countries to strengthen faculty and student mobility and expand global horizons.
The school places great emphasis on developing students’ practical skills. It houses advanced language-teaching and research laboratories, including a simultaneous-interpreting lab, a computer-aided translation (CAT) lab and a multi-modal language lab, together with eight micro-teaching studios for teacher education. The School has successively acquired the Trados CAT system, the Unipus foreign-language teaching platform, the Juku intelligent essay-training system, the iFLYHED intelligent speaking-training system, the Yixue business English practice platform, an intelligent maritime-language data processing and analysis platform, and the iTEST online foreign-language assessment platform. The development of modern teaching facilities and digital education platforms has significantly accelerated the reform of foreign language pedagogy, enhancing the quality of student training.
In this new era and on the new journey to the future, we remain committed to the founding spirit of Tan Kah Kee and the guiding principle of “Sincerity and Perseverance in Cultivating Talent”.
